SCAMPISM B

The SCAMPI B is designed to provide detailed appraisal results with minimal corporate investment.  The SCAMPI B consists of the same basic steps of the more formal appraisals (plan and prepare, conduct, and report) yet it is scaled down to reduce the impact to the organization and resource utilization.  Organizations often use the SCAMPI B to minimize the risk of performing a SCAMPI A.  Organizations can also use the SCAMPI B to verify that improvements that have been made resulted in maximum benefit to the organization, and to determine the areas requiring additional attention to achieve their next process improvement goals.  The objectives of the SCAMPI B include:

  • Complete gap analysis;
  • Set priorities / goals for improvements;
  • Make recommendations for an action plan against goals.

The SCAMPI B typically takes between 3 to 5 days.  Fully authorized appraisal leads the SCAMPI B/C guideline to perform the appraisal.  The level of detail used to assess each area of the model is not as thorough as it would be in a more formal appraisal.  The findings and recommendations are based on the expert judgment of the appraisal team performing the SCAMPI B.  The results of the SCAMPI B provide practice characterizations for each practice within the scope of the SCAMPI B.  These characterizations loosely indicate a level of risk the observed implementation of that practice would have on the rating during a SCAMPI A.  A high practice characterization indicates that the observed implementation of that practices of the model would have a low risk of negatively impacting the desired rating during the SCAMPI A.  A medium practice characterization would have medium risk on the rating and a low characterization would have a high risk on the desired rating.  Another beneficial outcome of a SCAMPI B the identification of areas where documentation is not as well defined as it should be or where processes are inappropriate for the organization.

The SCAMPI B includes:

  • Appraisal Plan, including a definition of the organizational appraisal objectives;
  • Opening briefing summarizing the appraisal objectives, process maturity concepts, and the SCAMPI B method;
  • Review of organizational documents (policies, procedures, guidelines, training materials, etc.)
  • Review of project documents (project plans, CM plans, QA plans, Risk Management Plans, Requirements Traceability Matrices, etc.)
  • Interviews with management and practitioners; and
  • Complete appraisal findings presentation.

The final findings presentation is delivered to a sponsor selected audience upon conclusion of the site visit.  Complete appraisal results is produced using an appraisal tool and if desired, improvement action plans can also be produced.

Many companies have benefited from the SCAMPI B, and consider it an important part of their process improvement journey.
