ISO 9000

ISO 9000 is the structural framework of a business system that specifies, in very broad terms, the necessary components of a quality management system.  Rather than being specific to any one industry, ISO 9000 details the basic requirements of the quality function for all industries.  Currently, ISO 9000 includes three core quality management standards: ISO 9000:2000 - Fundamentals and vocabulary, ISO 9001:2000 – Requirements, ISO 9004:2000 - Guidance for performance improvement.  All of these are process standards (not product standards).

The ISO 9000:2000 standards are designed “to facilitate continual improvement of the business, stimulating its overall efficiency in order to increase competitive advantage and to respond better to customers’ needs and expectations.”  These standards are represented in four main sections in the revised process model.  These sections are: Management Responsibility, Resource Management, Product and / or Service Realization, and Measurement, analysis and improvement.
