CMMI® for Services (CMMI-SVC)

The CMMI-SVC, V1.2 model is a collection of best practices that is generated from the CMMI V1.2 Architecture and Framework. This includes services best practices from both government and industry. The Services constellation covers activities required to establish, deliver, and manage services. As defined in the CMMI context, a service is an intangible, non-storable product. The CMMI-SVC model has been developed to be compatible with this broad definition. CMMI-SVC goals and practices are therefore potentially relevant to any organization concerned with the delivery of services, including enterprises in sectors such as defense, information technology (IT), health care, finance, and transportation.

CMMI-SVC is a minimal and logical extension to CMMI v1.2 content, which allows current CMMI users to improve service performance. There is extensive reuse of the process areas of the CMMI-Dev. Of the 24 process areas, 16 are CMMI Foundation (CMF) and 7 focus on practices specific to services, addressing capacity availability and management, service continuity, service delivery, incident resolution and prevention, service transition, service system development, and strategic service management processes, and one is new. As there is so much commonality, companies moving to the Services constellation do not need to start over, and they finally have a model that more closely matches their process needs.

For those of you who are familiar with the CMMI-Dev, you should feel at home with many of the following process areas:
